Friday Files by Shabbat Club: Vol. 8
Notes from mom & dad, upcoming events, where we're eating + more...
Shabbat Shalom friends! The last time I sent one of these, we were bracing for what felt like WWIII. I’m very grateful to be writing under slightly calmer circumstances.
“Almost Shabbat” season is officially in full swing now that everyone’s in the Hamptons by Friday, so we’ve got a bunch of Thursday night events coming up. Buttt we’re also planning some smaller Shabbat dinners at restaurants across the city, so if you’re interested in “hosting” one, shoot us a DM—we’ll do most of the work ;)
Also, I love a chill Friday night rooftop Shabbat dinner with friends…can we start hosting those again? And if you’re already doing that, please invite me.
Unsolicited advice from mom & dad
My parents roast me daily, so here’s some wisdom they’ve unknowingly provided for the Shabbat Club community:
Dad (on solo weekend trips): “I hope you choose to go. You will never have a second July weekend at age 28 again!! Make the best of it. And if you do it right, being alone for a day might not be so bad. Plan ten things to do if you wind up alone some of the time.”
Mom (on civic responsibility): “You guys need to get out the vote against Mamdani.”
People You Should Know
Josh Goldberg (NYC, 34): Founder @ Nice Film Club
“Born and raised in NYC, I find my rhythm in coffee, long nights of cooking with friends, weekends upstate, and the occasional Shabbat Club gathering. I run a Brooklyn film lab called Nice Film Club—turns out turning your obsession into a business is a personality trait! Still not sure if my Border Collie, Leica, works for me or the other way around.”
Sasha Nussbaum (NYC, 34): Founder @ RECLOTHE. Collective
“Passionate about circular fashion and giving great clothes a second (or third) life. I run RECLOTHE, a curated online consignment shop helping stylish New Yorkers turn closet clean-outs into cash and find fashion that feels good and does good. Off duty, I’m usually at AMC, walking my rescue pup Indie, biking in a dorky helmet, or working through my Google Maps restaurant list.”

ICYMI:
Friday Night Nosh with Yiddish Dad Hats
We hosted Shabbat with one of the coolest Jewish brands in the business: Yiddish Dad Hats. Casa Malka and Israeli Wine kept the drinks flowing, and Sarge’s Deli lived up to its reputation. Next up: deli party?
Favorite bites: Challah pastrami sliders, hot dog station
Almost Shabbat with Friday Tables
We teamed up with our old friends Friday Tables for a Thursday night dance party at Ding-a-Ling, then took over Joyface next door for an after party full of disco music and 80s rock heaven.
Favorite drink: DIO Espresso Martini

What We’re Buying: Jewish Cookbooks
All the cookbooks we love that you can find on sale for Amazon Prime Day. The authors are incredible and inspiring Jewish women, and their delicious recipes span so many cultures and occasions.
My tried and true recommendations:
The Jewish Holiday Table by Naama Shefi & the Jewish Food Society
Yassou: The Simple, Seasonal Mediterranean Cooking of Greece by Shaily Lipa
Shabbat: Recipes & Rituals from My Table to Yours by Adeena Sussman

Where We’re Eating: Buba Bureka
Location: Greenwich Village, NYC
The first-ever bureka-only shop in NYC, Buba Bureka is a collab between Breads Bakery and Israeli chef Ben Gingi. The menu has only four options: potato, spinach-artichoke, cheese, and corn, each served with crushed tomato, tahini, schug, and jammy eggs. It feels like a slice of Israel (especially on weekends).
Pro-tip: Go before 2pm on weekdays and 12pm on weekends. They always sell out. And DO NOT skip the potato under any circumstances!!
Things We’re Overthinking
Is it brave or masochistic to go to Israel in August?
Not me agreeing with Azealia Banks…
Will I meet my soulmate at Love Club, or will hot girl summer be just a heatwave?
Community Events
Paid subscribers get access to our Substack chat and Community Events Board, featuring a curated list of events in NYC and beyond.

Reminder to call your grandparents!
Bye now, thanks for reading <3
Love ya,

P.S. If you’ll be in Israel between August 11-21, hit us up or connect us with your most fun friends in TLV. We’re trying to party (and do good) for 10 days straight…send recs.
Is the thought behind your mom's message to vote for Curtis Sliwa? Or should we mobilize 3rd party and let Curtis Sliwa win anyway?
